We were both excited and honored when homeWORD, a local non-profit for affordable housing, asked us to join their team of builders in constructing two extreme energy-efficient apartment complexes in downtown Missoula. Sunelco was responsible for the design and construction of large roof-mounted photovoltaic arrays on each building. Our goal was to create a robust, cost-effective system that would allow for minimum maintenance and maximum cost-effectiveness. After all, the idea was to keep the housing affordable. We were able to accomplish this by fastening our solar arrays to steel I-beams installed through the roof. We also set the tilt to the optimal angle for year-round production, while keeping in mind the high wind speeds at 4 stories up.
